I’ve always believed that anything can be achievable with the right mindset and determination. I’m writing this note on my way back from a show in Charleston, South Carolina. I always get asked the question, where is your favorite place that you have performed? I’m grateful to have performed in so many different places including international tours across China, the Middle East, Canada and the States. Being a magician has allowed me to connect with people of all different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds. Performing for audiences in China who didn’t speak a word of English had its challenges but allowed me to see that magic is truly a universal art form.
I recently returned from Dallas where I performed for a group of 600 engineers & architect’s. For some reason, I perform more shows in Texas than any other state. Not sure if there is a shortage of magicians…Haha!! It’s one of my favorite places as everyone is so friendly. The hospitality in the southern states is like no other. When I’m asked to do a show out of town, I always try to explore the region. Being from the city, I’m a true fan of getting out in nature and hiking in different spots. I can literally write a book on some of my adventures but here is a true story that I will always remember.
Last summer, I had a show in Aspen. I had to catch a flight from Denver which is about a 4 hour drive. I headed out early in the morning, drove 90 minutes to the highway only to find out that it was closed. I thought it was just the on-ramp that was closed but it turned out that the entire highway was closed due to the fact that it rained the night before. What?! Rain closed the highway?
Being from Toronto, I didn’t realize that in the mountains, they have mud slides. So now I’m told to drive back to Aspen and try another road called “Independence Pass”. When I finally arrive, there is an officer who stops my car and asks if I have ever been on this road before. He mentions that I will be driving over 15,000 feet up along the edge of the mountain with NO guardrails, gravel roads, single lanes and the possibility of mud slides. With no other option, I had to experience one of the scariest drives that I have ever taken. Along the route, I was greeted by mountain goats and other wildlife. It truly was a spectacular view and a ride that I will never forget. I’m excited to be returning to Aspen this summer for another show in August. I’ll try a different road this time!
